Culinary or cosmetic argan oil: the difference and how to use it
Culinary or cosmetic argan oil? What sets them apart, how to use argan oil in cooking and amlou, and on hair and skin.
The argan tree grows mainly in south-west Morocco, and its fruit gives the argan oil known all over the world. There are two kinds worth telling apart.
Culinary or cosmetic
- Culinary oil: the kernels are roasted before pressing. It is darker and smells of toasted nuts. It is used in cooking and to make amlou.
- Cosmetic oil: pressed from unroasted kernels, it is lighter with a mild smell. It is used on skin and hair.
In the kitchen
- A few drops on couscous or a tagine, after cooking.
- With bread and honey at breakfast.
- In amlou, with almonds and honey.
Better not to heat it strongly: high heat takes away its flavour.
For hair and skin
- Hair: a few drops on the ends after washing.
- Skin: one or two drops on clean skin, ideally in the evening.
Start with a small amount, a little goes a long way. If your skin is sensitive, try it on a small area first.
